The ZeroTrash Story

ZeroTrash started in 2007 when Laguna Beach resident Chip McDermott grew tired of seeing trash in the streets and on Laguna's beautiful beaches. Rather than accept the status quo, Chip founded  ZeroTrash, an organization consisting of volunteers and local businesses dedicated to beautifying the environment and educating others as to the benefits of environmental awareness.

In 2014, Rancho Santa Margarita City Councilman Brad McGirr, with the assistance of the Bell Tower Foundation, founded the Rancho Santa Margarita chapter of ZeroTrash, and the RSM chapter has thrived ever since.  To date, ZeroTrash RSM volunteers  have removed thousands of pounds of trash from RSM's streets, parks and wilderness areas.  The ZeroTrash movement continues to expand to additional cities in Orange County with the hope that ZeroTrash will be implemented county-wide.

This all-volunteer community organization remains dedicated to ridding city streets, beaches and wilderness areas of trash, reducing waste, supporting local business, and educating others to take personal responsibility for our community and the environment!

1st SATURDAY is the cornerstone of the ZeroTrash RSM movement.  It’s our monthly event which rallies volunteers to meet in the courtyard across from city hall, and to thereafter spend just two hours to clean the streets and wilderness areas here in Rancho Santa Margarita. Everyone of all ages are welcome;  parents, children, students, scouts, church groups, clubs, sports teams, etc.!  We're very proud to include as ZT volunteers, members of various environmental organizations, church groups and teen volunteers from the Lion's Heart organization. (www.lionsheartservice.org)

Join ZeroTrash RSM in the courtyard across from City Hall the 1ST SATURDAY of EVERY month between 10 AM  & 12 Noon to help clean up the streets and wilderness areas; and thank you for your activism!

ZeroTrash RSM works with our city council and staff in advocating for public recycling events, an increase in the number of public trash recepticles, appropriate cigarette butt disposal, and environmental awareness.

Importantly, our ZeroTrash volunteers provide a service to the entire community without the support of any tax money whatsoever.  Indeed, many Rancho Santa Margarita City Council members, Planning Commissioners and city staff regularly volunteer at our 1st Saturday events!

Our ZeroTrash organization consists of volunteers of all ages!  By taking part in our 1st Saturday events, students earn their required community service hours, scouts earn their merit badges, and we all provide a tangible benefit to our community!
